Dr Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), met with leaders of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) led by Esosa Oviawe, Programme Manager of Global Rights. The visit was to discuss ways to work together to improve data privacy, digital rights, and public awareness in Nigeria.
Mr Oviawe praised the Commission for its work in improving Nigeria’s data protection and privacy system after the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 was passed. He stressed the need for ongoing cooperation between the NDPC and CSOs to build trust, support rights-based talks, and create a better environment for data protection projects. He also said that CSOs have been watching the Commission’s work closely and want to help train people and raise public awareness about data protection and privacy rights.
Both parties talked about more ways to work together and confirmed their promise to keep supporting privacy, trust, and responsibility in Nigeria’s digital world.
Dr Olatunji thanked the delegation for their visit and for finding ways to work together. He stressed the importance of raising awareness and developing skills, which are main goals in the Commission’s plan. He recognized the important role of CSOs, saying their close ties to communities make them key partners in promoting data protection and privacy. Dr Olatunji also shared that the Commission has translated the NDP Act into Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo to help more people understand it better.
