The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has officially unveiled the Igbo translation of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, at a ceremony in Enugu State. This initiative is a core part of the Commission’s strategy to enhance inclusivity and language accessibility, ensuring that citizens across the South-East can access and understand their fundamental rights as data subjects, irrespective of their educational background or primary language.

Dr Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner and CEO of the NDPC, was represented by Ms Fatima Sanni of the Research and Development Department. Ms Sanni acknowledged the crucial support from partners, including Meta Inc. for their work on the translation project, the Enugu State Government, and the Enugu SME Agency. She highlighted that this move directly aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises digital inclusion, citizen data protection and fostering growth within Nigeria’s data-driven economy.
Following the launch, Ms Sanni encouraged the widespread dissemination of the newly translated Act throughout South-East communities. The objective is to significantly deepen public understanding of data protection principles and reinforce a sustainable culture of privacy across all levels of society, making data literacy a national standard rather than a niche understanding
